Two excelling teen girls on their quest to improve their English skills and the terrible accident that ended the dream
We usually post once a week but in light of the accident we felt compelled to write a short note on Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia. Given the sad ending to their lives and the purpose of the trip to California we deem it appropriate to share our thoughts on the matter.
On their way to California to attend a summer church camp in hopes of improving their English skills these two close friends were the only two fatalities in the Asiana Airlines flight that crash landed in San Francisco. They each excelled at their respective hobbies, piano and calligraphy respectively. To be able to communicate fluently in English (or improve upon those skills) would have been an incredible accomplishment in already wonderful lives.
The desire to improve upon one's language skills is remarkable, more so when it means travelling outside of your native country to do so. Learning a language foreign to you is a big step in becoming a citizen of the world. A world which is becoming smaller by means of technology and the ever increasing desire of society to communicate with each other. One can only imagine the excitement and anticipation that had built up in these girls over the early summer for this moment.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia. We honor the lives of these outstanding students. You will not be forgotten by your global academic community.
May the quest for impovement and unity continue for all.
Until next time!
